The Plank to Plank is an annual 6 mile downwind race for both Stand up and prone paddlers from the shores of Coronado southbound to Imperial Beach. The race concludes just a stones throw from the world famous “Ye Olde Plank Inn” pub, one of IB’s classic icons, with its famous Captain Morgan perched atop the tiki bar. The Plank to Plank Paddle Race is well known for its all you can drink bar tab for the finishers (over 21 only) and as you can imagine the beers taste great after a 6 mile haul across the ocean.
The race had about 20 takers of both prone and Sup and a nice downwind breeze to help push the racers along the way. The final result had a prone paddler taking pole position finishing just ahead of local Imperial Beach SUP paddler extraordinaire Mark “Kiwi” Field taking the second spot overall with both coming in at just over an hour for the 6 mile course.
After the race the parched finishers made a mad dash for the open bar and raffle. Kiwi, the winner of the sup race, was bestowed the coveted Golden Broomstick for taking the top SUP spot. Lots of other great prizes were raffled off and every walked away with something including a fresh lobster in a cooler for one lucky chap donated by URT clothing. (Its lobster season in case you didn’t know)
Marc Miller of Isle Paddle Boards took 2nd in the sup division and third overall behind “Kiwi”. He paced him for the first mile or so but once Kiwi pulled away there was no catching up to the old Ox and the Golden Broomstick was not to be for the Isle Crew…until next year!
*And in case you haven’t figured it out the race name “Plank to Plank” means “ride your Plank to Ye Olde Plank Inn and enjoy”!
